BT Young Scientist and Technology Exibition 2018
The BT Young Scientist Exibition was a real eye-opener to me. It showed me all the different experiences science can lead to as I saw many weird and wonderful ideas and creations secondary school students as myself had come up with. It helped devlop my public speaking as I was being asked to explain my project to many judges and dozens of people each day under pressure of explaining it clearly and getting my point across.
I was very grateful and honoured to be excepted into this prestigious competition as 2500 projects entered and only 550 projects got excepted even though mine was not very science driven. My project was titled "An Maith Leat Gaeilge?" which means do you like Irish? My investigation was about student's attitudes towards Irish as a subject and what they think about it. I surveyed students from 1st,2nd,Ty and 5th year to see what they think about irish and if it effects their grades and how they will use it outside of school. I had alot of Gaelgoirs come up to me that were interested in my project as it original and not done before. I also had alot of colleges that were based in Irish or Irish teaching based come up to see what my findings were. Everyone including the judges that came to see my project were amazed at what I investigated in my findings.
I did the project as an individual. This was challenging at times as alot of work had to be done prior to the days in the RDS such as diary plans, poster boards and the documenting booklet of my overall project. I also had to sit by myself up there which was challenging but I made alot of new freinds who I am still close with there as they were on their own aswell.
I loved being at the Young Scientist, meeting new people and learning new things. I would love to return to the RDS to further my project or with a new idea as it is an amazing experience.
Here is my project which i competed with.
