GAA with a Twist
On the 14th of December our TY year along with 1st,2nd,3rd and 5th years staged our TY production named "GAA with a Twist". We practiced for almost two months so our show could be one to remember. It was a lot of hard work trying to organisze this show as there were so many cast members and so much going on. As a year we tried our very best to make sure we reached the high standard of productions done in the school even though we did not do a musical type production which is usually done. At the start of the year we did not know what we were going to do. It started off that we were going to do a talent show, then a variety show, then nothing at all. There were even rumors that we were going to do a jiving show. The inspiration came from the victory of the Galway minor and senior hurling teams winning the All-Ireland after 29 years. It was then decided that it would be a GAA themed show titled "GAA with a Twist" .
The show was directed by Mr. Coughlan who helped us with the acting of the show and developed the script. Although there was a lot of conflict, as there would be with a major production new to the school we got through it to have an amazing show. Our music teacher, Ms. Coyle was the musical director of the show. She composed the whole arrangment of music from old Irish traditional music to grease lightning. We had to learn how to dance in the grease part of the show which was a lot of fun. Angela Dedia choreographed all the dances and helped us learn them.
I played one of the main parts in Many Young Men of Twenty as Peg. My character was a girl who is a barmaid who is trying to be convinced to move to America by two men where one wants to mary her. I loved acting in this scene as I loved the role and that I got to sing in it. I also played the part of Coco in a scene of 'Hot Mickado'. This was a parody crossover of annoying things in the GAA and the song 'Little List'. As I was given the song two weeks before the show I found it very difficult to learn such a fast long song with the choreography but it ended up being good in the end.
One of the final scenes was Grease, where all our year got to dance in it. We got to dance to the iconic "hand-jive" and "we go together". I found this very fun and one of the best parts of the night. The show was one of my favourite activites that we did in the yea. I was very proud of my perfomace and it was definetly a highlight of the year that I will not forget.
