Delphi
On the 20th September we headed off to Delphi Resort in Co. Mayo. We left the school at 9:40 that morning which was fine until my school bus decided to break down therefore making me late while trying to carry three bags and a sleeping bag! After the very dramatic morning we were off. It took two and a half hours to get there, but we got to see the beautiful scenery on the way that west Ireland has to offer.
When we arrived our bus could not drive all the way in, so we had to carry all of our luggage from the bus to the reception. Sleeping bags, pillows, the lot! When we finally reached the reception we were directed to 'The Den' where we were told our timetable of the days, our rooms and basically what Delphi had to offer for us. After we got our rooms we unpacked and got ready for our event.
One group went to go surfing the the other went and did high ropes. I was in the group that did high ropes first. High ropes were obstical you hadto do high up re you were attached to a harness. One obstical was where you has to climb up a high wooden pole, when you got to the top you came to a tight rope. From there you had to walk across the tight rope while holding over head ropes. This led you to another wooden pole. When you reach this point you have to climb higher up the pole from there you reach a plank of wood that stretches over to the first pole you climbed up. You have balance yourself and walk across this plank. I didn't think I was scared of heights but after doing that I was very frightened. When you reached the end you then had to walk back wards to the middle.(This part is there I found it the hardest) You then had to lean backwards off the plank to where you were lowered to the ground. It was very hard in my experience but the support I got from the rest of the group while doing it made me carry on. The second obstical was called 'the leap of faith'. This is where you climb up another high wooden poll and balance yourself at the top to where you face to balls. You then have to jump off the pole to reach two of the balls. I did not find tyhis too bad as I was still pumping adrenaline from the fright of the last obstical. I did not do the last obstical but I anchored people who did. This was where you had to climb up with four other people on a wooden pole. You then had to lean back holding onto everyone and try not to fall. After we headed back to our rooms to rest before we had dinner. After dinner we had our evening activity. This was tunnels with obsticals in them where you had to crawl through. After we went on a walk to look at the beauty around Delphi.
The second day was a whole other ball game. This was the day we went on a 20 km walk for our Gaisce awards. We started at 10:15am and didnt finish until 3:30 pm that day. I found this very challenging and by half way through it I didnt mind being at the back of the group. I was going at my own pace. I found the walk very challenging and the steep hills very difficult. We managed to survive the walk and we supported each other through it. when we trudged back to our rooms we were given a half an hour break until lunch. Our evening activity was a campfire. We were suposed to sing songs by the fire and play instruments as a group, but this only half worked as half of people were singing and the other half judged the people singing. This was to create team bonding but since our group did not want to bond there was nothing that could be done.
For our final day my group went surfing and the other group went on the high ropes course. I love surfing and I couldnt wait to get in the water even though I was quite sick. The instructors showed us how to stand up on the boards and the safety signals and codes. The waves were so good, from experiencing alot of surfing before this, I can tell you the waves in Delphi were unreal. They were high enough to catch but not high enough that you would be submerged if you didnt catch it. I managed to stand up on the board succesfully many times and I really enjoyed it. This was my favourite part of the trip as it is one of my loved hobbies. After surfing we all met back in Delphi and has lunch. Everyone waited in the court yard where we played music and soccer until our bus came.
For or me I thought Delphi was a good experience. Personally I wouldn't go back there as I feel like it's a once in a lifetime experience with suprises and pushing yourself to the limit. I feel like I really pushed myself out of my comfort zone while doing the activities there which I will probably take with me even after Ty.
